![]() The Future of DFS Replication in Windows Serverĭespite these configure tools, it’s clear from the community that to make DFS-R an acceptable application for mission-critical work would require significant development from Microsoft. The most commonly used are the ones mentioned earlier. There are some basic resources available in Windows whereby users can gain limited status information on the DFS-R service. Replication times should be predictable and fast, especially for mission-critical workflows, regardless of the network topology (i.e. ![]() Another common complaint from customers is the performance of the service is often inconsistent. A simple “force replication” feature would solve these problems. Waiting for the service to “get around to it” is not a viable option. For example, a common pain customers experience is when a file is sitting in a SCHEDULED state with no clear way to start the replication. Many of these address basic visibility and control issues inherent in the service. DFS-R is effectively a “black box,” indicating nothing about the current status of the service. You should execute the following command from PowerShell to install it. In the latest Windows Server builds, DFS Management Tools may not be installed. Option two is to use the Dfsrdiag.exe tool that provides DFSR status. Ultimately, this is a good fiction/non-fiction mashup that provides poignant insight into the terrifying world of a century ago. I felt like it was ill-timed commercial breaks: “And now, a word from Jacob Riis!” Eventually, I got used to it. I wanted to continue Emily’s story, and not be interrupted by the non-fiction. The jumps from fiction to non-fiction can be abrupt, and the first few times it happened, I didn’t like it. Interspersed with Emily’s story are non-fiction passages that make reference to the chapter of her story just finished-these include information about child labor in general, the garment factories and the various jobs that girls would have within them, the tenement neighborhoods, immigration, and social reformers. She’s caught in this horrible moment of history, where she wants to help her family, wants to be loyal, but is essentially being tortured to do it. She’s working to help support her family, and has an overseer that threatens her with dismissal with every huff. She’s only twelve years old, and earns less than five dollars a week. But that job is eleven hours a day, where she’s standing in a hot, airless room, with hundreds of other women. She works in a garment factory, and her job seems simple-just clipping threads from blouses. ![]() It can be jarring for some readers, but it presents a broader view of history than the historic fiction would on its own.įactory Girl is the story of Emily Watson, living in New York City in the early 1900s. Her method is to interweave a fictional story about a young person with interstitials and sidebars about historic events from the same time period. She’s written several other history books for young readers, including The Last Safe House: A Story of the Underground Railroad and Gold Rush Fever: A Story of the Klondike, 1898. One of the books we used this month was Factory Girl, by Barbara Greenwood. It’s a topic that’s usually undertaught in our schools for various reasons, and some of the resources we’ve found can help bring that past to light for kids. I’ve been working together with teachers in my school district to find new resources about the Progressive Era, and ways to teach that better to our students. Many of her short stories and articles have been published in the Canadian Children's Annual and educational anthologies. She has been president of CANSCAIP (Canadian Society of Children's Authors, Illustrators, and Performers) and has edited many CANSCAIP publications. She taught elementary school for many years and, later, taught creative writing to high-school and adult students. Barbara Greenwood studied at the University of Toronto. The reams of research "left-over" from her first two books was used in A Pioneer Story, an award-winning book which mixes fact, fiction, and hands-on activities as it delves into Ontario's past. The stories she creates are those she would have liked to read at age ten or twelve or fourteen. The information gleaned from her research becomes grist for the background details and settings of novels which emphasize character development and the human side of history. Now she immerses herself in the subject: reading old diaries, journals, and letters, visiting museums, doing in-depth research at libraries, visiting the areas where her books are set. When she was young she couldn't find novels about Canada's past. Inspired by her own early fascination with historical tales, author Barbara Greenwood specializes in writing historical fiction and biographies for children and young people. Two further weapons in the game are the chainsaw for close-quarter carnage, and the BFG9000 energy gun, that, while taking some practice to fire correctly, can destroy most enemies in a single burst. The rocket launcher also deals out lots of damage, but the explosion causes blast damage and must be used with care in confined areas or it might prove deadly to the player as well as the enemies. Also available are a shotgun (high damage, slow reload, not good at distances), a chaingun (high firing rate, but slightly inaccurate in longer bursts) and a plasma rifle (combining a high firing rate and large damage). The starting weapons are the fists and a simple pistol. An automap helps in navigating the levels.ĭOOM features a large weapon arsenal, with most weapons having both advantages and drawbacks. There are outdoor areas, pools of radioactive waste that hurt the player, ceilings that come down and crush him, and unlike Wolfenstein’s orthogonally aligned corridors, the walls in DOOM can be in any angle to each other. The engine simulates different heights (stairs and lifts appear frequently) and different lighting conditions (some rooms are pitch black, others only barely illuminated). The game’s engine technology is more advanced than Wolfenstein’s, and thus the levels are more varied and complex. Switches and buttons must be pressed to advance at certain points and often color-coded locked doors will block the way – matching keycards or skull keys must be found to pass. Since dozens of enemies stand in the way, the only way to get there is through killing them. The basic objective in each level is simply to reach the exit. The full game continues on Deimos in The Shores of Hell and culminates in Inferno, the final episode which takes place in Hell itself (the Sega 32x version lacks this episode). The first episode, Knee-Deep in the Dead, takes place in the Phobos base and is freely available as shareware. Like Wolfenstein, the game consists of distinct episodes, playable in any order. Id Software’s follow-up to their genre-defining Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM is another first-person 3D shooter: full-on action seen from the space marine’s perspective. It falls to the surviving marine to grab some guns and strike back at the demons. A squad of marines is sent to Phobos, but all except one are quickly slaughtered. Phobos base is overrun with demonic creatures, and the whole of Deimos simply vanishes. It seems the scientists have opened a gateway straight to Hell. After early successes, something goes wrong. Flights powered by ridge lift are generally confined to the vicinity of the ridge (which can be very high and long in mountainous regions) or coastal cliff, while thermal flights can extend over great distances and reach thousands of feet in altitude over mountains and flatlands. Soaring flight can be sustained generally through thermals (caused by solar heating of surface air) or ridge lift (caused by wind rising over geographical features), or both. In flight, conditions can be either soarable or not soarable (flights in non-soarable conditions are referred to as "sled runs"). Other, more exotic launch techniques have also been used successfully, such as hot air balloon drops for very high altitude launches. ![]() Launch techniques include foot-launching from a hill, tow-launching from a ground-based tow system, aerotowing (behind another powered aircraft), and powered harnesses. The nose angle and wing span is a little higher, and the sail is rather stiff. In the late 1990's the first commercially successful rigid wing hang glider came on the market (the "Exxtacy") with a leading edge of carbon fiber, which does not deform. Although many Icarus II and Icarus V gliders were built from plans sold by Kiceniuk, they were never commercially produced. All of the hang gliders in the Icarus series had hand-controlled rudders and the pilot flew in a reclining position (rather than a prone position as with other hang gliders). It was essentially a monoplane version of the previous Icarus designs. Icarus V was the precursor to the modern hang glider. These were rigid biplane flying wing designs by Taras Kiceniuk, Jr. The first notable hang gliders to abandon the Rogallo wing were Icarus I and Icarus II, built in 19 respectively. Modification of flight-safety decision are made in any case of flying. ![]() Though some "cable-leading edge" designs have more confined safe utility, some have found legitimate interest in the sub-family of rogallos. Consider those who were wanting "all the hang glider one could have from spending less than say $20 USD." Then a Batso or Bamboo Butterfly might fully satisfy these are variants of the Rogallo theme. However, "improving" a hang glider is one dimension of design activity a lateral direction of "morphing" a design category results in variants that provide specific kinds of performance, utility, specific-purpose fulfillment in this direction one may find hundreds of various hang glider designs within a type family. Other improvements in leading edge and materials design soon followed, improving the handling and efficiency of flexible-wing hang gliders. The Rogallo wing was subsequently improved in the mid-1970s with the invention of the Swallowtail design, several of which were used to impressive effect in the 1976 film Sky Riders. An alternative to hang gliding is Paragliding since the gear is more easily transported although it offers lower performance. Hang gliding then became popular world-wide, with the peak in the 1980s. ![]() Bill Moyes became the first to foot launch a Dickenson wing, a Rogallo with A-frame, in 1967. The hang glider was towed behind a ski-boat driven by Pat Crowe. ![]() This was first flown in public at the Grafton Jacaranda Festival in Sep of that year, flown by Rod Fuller. In Australia John Dickenson added an A-frame to the Rogallo wing in 1963. Throughout the 60s parallel development of hang gliders occurred in the USA and Australia. In 1960 Barry Palmer became the first to foot launch in a Rogallo wing. This device was considered as a possible landing system for the astronauts return to earth. Modern hang gliding was invented, or at least strongly influenced, by the NASA technician Francis Rogallo in 1948 with the invention of the Flexkite. |
